Tent Buying Guide

·    It is important that you choose a tent that is big enough for your needs. Manufacturers rate their tents in Berths. A 4 berth tent is NOT big enough for a Family of 4. This is especially important for young and growing families just think of all the extras you need to take. You should always choose a tent at least 2 or 3 berths bigger than the number of people you need to accommodate.

·    It is more important that your tent fits your needs rather than just fits your car. A roof rack, roof box or small camping trailer will give you the extra carrying capacity in the car, but a tent that is too small WILL spoil your family’s holiday.

·    Cheap will nearly always mean inferior. Generally cheaper tents lead to disappointing holidays; they will be less waterproof and flimsier. (See our Guide to tent construction). It is a false economy to buy cheaper, a few pound more spent on a quality tent WILL lead to quality holidays. Lasting many years more, so in the long term perhaps not false economy.

·    Erecting the tent is a challenge, especially for new campers. Look to the tents design and method or erection. Quick erect tents may seem the ideal solution, BUT they are often flimsy and not really suitable for family camping where weather protection and stability are essential. There is nothing more frightening for young children and even adults than a tent that moves significantly in windy conditions or leaks during wet conditions. A tent that is stable in the wind, and offers good protection in inclement weather - even if it does take 20-30 minutes to erect, it will lead to more enjoyable camping holidays.

·    Buy your tent from a specialist dealer. A few pounds saved by buying from bargain basements or multiples may soon be lost when you need good advice, optional accessories, spares and repairs.
